Handheld Surface Roughness Tester PCE-RT 1200
The handheld roughness tester sold by Dhanbad Instruments is used to determine surface roughness. This compact device is designed for mobile use and is powered by a robust battery, allowing for on-site measurements. It is suitable for use in laboratories, production environments, and other locations where surface roughness needs to be assessed. The measured values are displayed on a clear OLED screen. Additionally, the device can store up to 20 measured values, which can be accessed later via the micro USB interface. The included measurement software and USB cable facilitate data transfer and evaluation on a computer screen. The rechargeable battery is also charged through the micro USB interface, making it convenient for continuous use.
The device includes a protective cap for the sensor, shielding it from external damage. A calibration plate with a roughness standard is also provided to ensure measurement accuracy. The handheld roughness meter features a high-precision roughness test mechanism built in Switzerland, offering smooth operation, low measurement noise, and high reproducibility.
Different technologies and devices are used to measure surface roughness, distinguishing between contact and non-contact methods. For example, a tactile handheld roughness meter might use a single-call probe system, a two-stage probe system, or a reference probe system. The Dhanbad Instruments handheld roughness meter PCE-RT1200 operates according to the tactile method compliant with ISO 3274. In this method, a diamond probe tip is pulled across the surface of a workpiece at a steady speed. The horizontal movement of the probe tip causes a vertical deflection, which is recorded by an inductive displacement measurement system, creating a surface profile.
The probe tip’s angle and radius significantly affect the accuracy of roughness measurements. A larger angle and radius detect only coarser surface features, while a sharper angle and smaller radius capture finer details. However, sharper tips are more prone to wear and breakage. For regular surface inspection, the handheld roughness meter from Dhanbad Instruments, with a 90° tip angle and a 5 μm radius, offers a good balance between durability and precision, meeting accuracy class 2 standards. Calibration according to DIN ISO 5436 is straightforward with this device.
Rz: Average Roughness
Rz is the arithmetic mean of the largest single roughness depths of several adjacent individual measuring sections.
Ra: Arithmetic Average Roughness
Ra is a widely recognized and internationally applied roughness parameter. It is the arithmetic mean of the absolute values of the profile deviations within the reference length. Ra is typically smaller than the Rz value measured on the same roughness profile.
